"perfection" by Clint Mansell and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
A sequence occurred in the third act of Black Swan that had me leaning forward toward the screen, trying desperately to catch my breath. There are gifs of it floating around on Tumblr that I find kind of sacrilege, as that moment is meant to be seen in the cinema, not relegated to the confines of a social network. Clint Mansell’s score and adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s music for Swan Lake imbue this film with a perpetual sense of foreboding elegance. This particular track encapsulates everything that the protagonist Nina Sayers goes through emotionally and physically, from the visceral brass to the ethereal harps. But honestly, go watch the Black Swan. It is easily the most cinematic, visually arresting film of the year.
